From the Renaissance onwards, the discourse on architecture was largely based on the definition and analysis of architectural elements. Alberti’s six elements (locality, area, compartition, wall, roof, and opening; 1452), Gottfried Semper’s four elements (hearth, roof, enclosure, mound; 1851) and Le Corbusier’s Five Points of Architecture (pilotis, free facade, open plan, long window, roof garden; 1928) were all, in varying degrees, efforts to analyse the history of buildings. But since the globalization of modern architecture in the second half of the 20th century, the possibility of an elemental systematization of architecture has been largely ignored.
Elements that used to be the speciality of architects – the ceiling and the window, but also even the façade – have become devices, ceded to more advanced technological domains. But despite the attempts of parametric architecture to merge formerly distinct categories like roof, wall, and window into a continuous architectural surface, the fundamental elements of architecture endure, albeit in sometimes radically different forms.
By looking at the evolution of architectural elements across all cultures, the exhibition will avoid the Eurocentrism that still characterises architectural discourse, generating a fresh understanding of the richness of architecture’s fundamental repertoire, apparently so exhausted today…

Irma Boom, Tang Prize Medal Design Concept
Start from a rational, objective approach based on abstract principles of pure forms. With the geometrical principles, with the round shape of the medal in combination with the square, triangle and hexagon – abstract forms can be made and patterns arise. The visualization of the medal captures that by visually supporting the indefinite options, offering a framework for each category. Each of the four medals refers distinctively to one relevant discipline- and so does the geometrical structure in order to make a meaningful design.

Discovery new music at the Wilhelminapier Rotterdam
The Wilhelmina Pier in Rotterdam used to be a symbol of arriving and departing passengers on overseas journeys. Nowadays, the Wilhelmina Pier represents breath-taking new architecture and cultural hotspots as LantarenVenster, LP2 and Hotel New York. During Red Ear there will also be new sounds to be heard at the Wilhelmina Pier. With a daring programme we give you an adventurous treat of music: we call it Red Ear.
“Leven met Asperger” is de eerste aflevering van de serie “Ik ben wie ik ben”.
De film is gemaakt in opdracht van Studio Lonnewennekendonk. “Ik ben wie ik ben’ is een serie persoonlijke verhalen die anderen inspireren en laten zien hoe een client met een bepaalde aandoening positief – op een zelfstandige manier – in het leven kan staan.
Elke aflevering focust zich op een bepaalde aandoening of stoornis. We kruipen in het leven van een client die in eigen woorden vertelt over zijn of haar aandoening.
Wat we willen laten zien is de kracht of de potentie die de client van RIBW in zich heeft. Doelgroep bestaat niet alleen uit de mensen die de ziekte in zichzelf of naasten herkennen. Ook voor mensen die er niet veel mee te maken hebben, valt uit deze serie zeer persoonlijke verhalen inspiratie te halen.
